How long will website directories be around?

Directories have been around for a long time. The only difference nowadyas is that there are a lot more of them. Sadly enough most of these directories have been created mainly for search engine optimization (and generating revenue for the owner) and have little or no return traffic value.

Of course this is not the case for established directories like DMOZ, Yahoo Directory and such.

Directories who have some return traffic value and visitor value will be around for a long time and advertisers will keep submitting links to them. But the key to getting those values and the visitors is to focus on the visitor friendliness of the website (beside the common sense SEO strategies).

Once a directory turns into a website that online users actually use to find good websites, that directory is going to be online for a long time if not for ever.
